Koormavatharam is the second incarnation of Lord MahaVishnu. This avathar was taken to help the Devas get Amritu or elixir during the Samudra Manthan in Palazhi ocean. Mandhara mountain was chosen as the churning drill and the huge snake Vasuki as the churning rope. As the Mandhara mountain had no fixation it started to sink down. The Devas approached Vishnu for help. Then Vishnu took the form of Kurma (Tortoise or ‘Ama” in Malayalam) and lifted the mountain on his back and kept it in the right position for churning the ocean. This made it possible for the Devas to get the elixir and to come out of the curse of Durvasav Maharshi, by drinking it. Bhagvad purana, Agnipurana and Ramayana give more information about the Kurma Avtar of Vishnu .

This ancient temple which was installed about 3000 years ago was destroyed during the communal riots. The renovation work was started by the devotees in the early 80s and poojas started after resetting the broken idol and rebuilding the sanctum-sanctorum (Sreekovil) In order to identify the problems affecting the functioning of the temple an Ashtamangala Prasnam was carried out by eminent astrolegers on 3-5 February 2016 Although some remedial measures (Parihara poojas) were taken major activities including rebuilding the sanctum-sanctorum (Sreekovil), Chuttambalam, well, pond (Kulam) and Naveekarana Kalasam are yet to be taken up and completed so that the diety regains its lost pride, power and prestige. For undertaking and completing these tasks, construction commitee was set up recently. The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 50 Lakh. This can be undertaken only with the active co-operation and participation of devotees and magnificient donation from them. Dasavathara Temples around ponkunnu hills are Perumeen Puram Temple (Matsyavatharam-Fish), Amamangalam Sri Mahavishnu Temple (Koormavatharam-Tortoise), Panniam Vally varrier Madam Vishnu Temple (Varahavatharam -Boar), Thrikkoyikkal Narasimha Temple (Narasimhavatharam- man-lion), Theerthankara Vamana Temple (Vamanavatharam dwarf) Parasurama Temple in the premise of Kakkur Police Station (Parasuramavatharam-forest dweller), Ramaloor Sri Rama Temple (Sreeramavatharam), Kavil Balarama Temple (Balaramavtharam), Inthad Sri Krishna Temple (Sreekrishnavatharam) and Kalki which also is believed to be located in Kakkur.

Amamangalam Sri Maha Vishnu Temple is situated on the Kozhikode-Balussery State highway. It is about 18 k.m. north east of Calicut city and 6 k.m. south- west of Balussery town. Calicut International Airport is the nearst airport while Kozhikode is the nearest railway station. Plenty of buses ply on the Kozhikode-Balussery route and the nearst bus stop is at 11/4.
Legend:- This Temple was installed by Lord Parasurama, who was responsible for creation of Kerala by retrieving the land from the sea by throwing his proverbial axe. Lord Parasurama installed a number of Shiva and Durga temples in different parts of Kerala. In addition he thought of installing Vishnu Temples in Kerala for which aerial surveys were carried out to locate ideal places. Ponkunnu hills in the Kakkur village, Ramalloor desam, which had thick forests, clean water streams, different variety of birds and animals, living in peace and harmony, attracted his attention. Accordingly he met Gouthama Maharshi who was performing ‘Thapas’ at this place and on his advice installed the Dasavathara Temples around the Ponkunnu hills. These temples are within a radius of 3 to 4 kms. Amamangalam Sri Maha Vishnu Temple is one of these Dasavathara Temples installed by Lord Parasurama.
